- Findings: Complaint 1 – Power Steering Pump Noise: Inspected the power steering system and found the reservoir low. Found the power steering pump leaking from the housing and noisy during operation. Also found power steering fluid inside the steering rack boot, confirming internal rack seal failure. The leaking steering rack and leaking power steering pump are causing fluid loss, which has contributed to pump damage and noise. The steering rack and power steering pump both require replacement. Complaint 2 – Belt Noise on Cold Start: Inspected the drive belt area and found the belt fluid contaminated from leakage coming down the side of the engine from the power steering pump and oil pan. Replacing the belt by itself would only be temporary because the new belt would become oil soaked again and the noise would return. To properly correct the belt noise, the power steering pump leak and oil pan leak need to be repaired first, then the drive belt should be replaced. Additional Findings: Inspected the underside of the engine and found the oil pan leaking. This is a Category 3 oil leak, meaning an active dripping leak that requires repair and should not be treated as a monitor-only condition. Oil pan replacement is recommended. Customer Recommendation: Replace the failed leaking power steering pump. Replace the failed steering rack due to internal seal failure. Replace the leaking oil pan to correct the Category 3 active oil leak. After leak repairs are completed, replace the fluid-contaminated drive belt. Perform engine oil and filter service as requested. These repairs address the source of the power steering noise and the cause of the cold-start belt noise.
